Art talk "Scary tales from art history: Durer, Goya, Carrington, Edels, Hokusai & others" - October 31st

Spooky night has a long art history behind it. Long before pumpkins and plastic skeletons, artists were painting witches on broomsticks, dancing corpses and ghostly faces at séances. This Halloween, we invite you to trace where these images come from. Why did Roman hosts hand their guests little silver skeletons at dinner parties? How did the Black Death set the dead dancing across the walls of European churches? And why, after the First World War, did grieving families turn to séances and photographs of ghostly “ectoplasm”? Together with art historian Elizaveta Kushnareva, we’ll explore the witch, the skeleton and the ghost, from Dürer and Goya to Victorian spirit photography and feminist ritual, and we’ll see how every era turned its deepest fears into images.
